Manufactured medications generally take a “one size fits all” approach to patient care. This is not always adequate to properly address the patient’s needs.

Compounding is the combination of hundreds of years of pharmaceutical science with state-of-the-art chemicals, equipment, training, and knowledge to make a medication that fits the patient. In conjunction with the prescriber and patient, the compounding pharmacist provides a one-of-a-kind medication in the exact dose and form that works best. Compounded prescriptions allow us to tailor them to the patient and can improve compliance when the patient may be unable or unwilling to take their medication as prescribed.

Commercially available drugs do not fit ALL patients. We can compound customized doses of medication, such as bio-identical hormone restoration therapy (BHRT) for both men and women. Children may need specific doses not available at a regular pharmacy; our team can compound their unique dose in a liquid that is flavored and will taste better to them.

Patients may be a fit for customized, compounded medications if:

• Requiring a dosage strength not commercially available
• Requiring different formulations (ex. creating a liquid medication to replace a tablet/capsule or topical formulations of oral drugs)
• Wanting or needing to avoid unwanted ingredients or allergens (ex. dyes, gluten, lactose, or preservatives)
• Needing to make prescription medication more palatable with added flavors
• Unavailable to find medication due to production shortages or discontinuation
• Seeking bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT)
• Reducing “pill burden” and making treatment regimens more patient-friendly
• Treating complex or difficult-to-treat disease states (i.e., combining multiple drugs into a single dosage form)

The main difference between BHRT (bio-identical hormone restoration therapy) and HRT is the substances used to create them. Male and female BHRT is derived from plant sources that are chemically similar to the hormones your body naturally produces, while some traditional HRT products are made from the urine of pregnant horses or other synthetic chemicals.

Some patients prefer BHRT because of its natural sources and because we can adjust the doses to better suit their needs. Commercially available HRT only comes in certain doses.

From time to time, drug manufacturers discontinue production, or have availability issues or shortages that prevent you from getting your or your pet’s medication. We can help!

Sometimes we have access to the active ingredients and can compound a medication for you. Ask your prescriber, veterinarian, or compounding pharmacist about it.

YES! To us, they are a “furson”. We understand you want them to have treatment on par with your own. Medicating pets can present unique problems that are sometimes best handled with compounding.

Have you ever tried to get your cat to take a pill?  Cats are masters of pill rejection, usually eating everything in the bowl BUT the pill. Did you know…that with some medications we can compound a topically applied cream to be rubbed on the inside of your cat’s ear?

All animals are not the same size! A 100-pound Rottweiler needs far more medication than a 5-pound Chihuahua.

The compounding of individualized medicines is both legal and ethical according to The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as long as they are:

1. prescribed by a licensed practitioner for an individual patient, and
2. prepared at a state licensed and inspected pharmacy
   
   

The Florida State Board of Pharmacy is responsible for regulating and maintaining the licenses of all state pharmacies. Creative Scripts maintains a clean compounding laboratory complete with state-of-the-art compounding equipment. At our Naples, FL pharmacy, the staff is educated and experienced in their practice. A licensed pharmacist will verify all compounded medications, ensuring quality and accuracy.

We do not bill your insurance company directly, but we can provide a Universal Claim Form for Compounded Medications, which you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.
